- A proof-of-concept prototype of a 3D continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composite (MMC) freeform fabrication method is demonstrated through controlling the wetting behavior between fibers and matrix, and the interfacial reactions of the composite. To improve the wetting behavior, the carbon fibers were treated by electroplating 1μm Ni and 2μm Cu coatings and homogeneously covered with soldering flux. The tension strength of Cf/Sn50Pb50 composite filament prepared at the rate of 1mm/s at 245℃ reached 124.1Mpa. The levels of interfacial reaction can be tailored by altering printing rate, which greatly affects the interfacial microstructures. This approach demonstrated a potential fabrication methodology for MMC especially in the situation where interfacial tension dominated the process, like micro gravity in space, to print extravehicular large structures, such as satellite antenna, space shuttle truss.
