- In this paper, a continuous carbon fiber(CF) composite for electromagnetic interference shielding(EMIS) was obtained by continuous fiber 3D printing process. The continuous CF was used as conductive filler, and the thermoplastic resin of polylactide(PLA) was the matrix. 3D printed composite exhibited tunable shielding effectiveness (SE) by changing the angle between the CF orientation and the electric field(E-field). The SE was enhanced from 6.8 to 59.5dB with the angle decreasing from 90°(perpendicular to E-field) to 0°(parallel to E-field). In order to decrease the anisotropy of SE, CF deposited in a crossply (0°/90°) configuration was also studied with a shielding effectiveness SEav of 52.5dB in X band. Furthermore, with the copper and nickle coating on the CF, the SE could be further improved by about 5dB and10dB, achieving a high SEav of 62dB. The prepared CF composite has a low density of 1.03g/cm3, and fiber volume content of 6.3%, fiber mass content of 10.2%. Therefore, this proposed composite holds great promise as an electromagnetic interference shielding structure with high shielding effectiveness, strong processing ability, mechanical strength and light weight. Taking the advantages of 3D printing technology, the composites could be fabricated into any complex structures rapidly in low cost.
