论文名称:Length, Quantity, and Order of Sentence Segments: Possible Indicators of TQA?

摘要:Fluency, being one of the widely accepted criteria of translation, is not always easy to achieve and therefore is usually an important issue in translation practice. Our study on the process of translation revision shows that segmentation and reconstruction of sentence segments are the major approaches to achieve fluency, which is particularly true when it comes to more complex sentences.
Is it justifiable to consider the length, the quantity and the sequential adjustment as indicators of fluency, so that they may be accepted as possible indexes to assess translation quality?
We have conducted a corpus-based research to compare the translation of Howard Goldblatt and translation learners. Results show that the number of sentence segments in Goldblatt’s version is significantly different from those of the learners’, and the latter goes much closer to the originals. It also shows that among the 10% sentences with the same amount of segments, there are only 56.25% sentences strictly following the pattern of their originals, whereas the rest 43.75% has been changed more or less.
Next, more typical and representative samples will be collected for more strict and objective statistical testing, aiming to explore a theoretically reasonable range for the length and the quality of sentence segments as well as the law of their proper movements.
This research aims to provide some new and effective indexes for translation quality assessment, in the hope of offering more choices for quantitative studies. What’s more, these indexes will also be inspiring for translation improvement and translator style research.
