Inside Cover: The alkaline environment and charge carriers in an alkaline fuel cell can be created by hydrolysis of the fuel. In their Communication on page page 5734 ff., Y. S. Li et al. report a Na+-conducting direct formate fuel cell that converts chemical energy into electricity in the absence of added base. At the cathode, NaOH is obtained as a byproduct, which is radically different from the conventional chlor-alkali process.
