The unique bimetallic nanostructures act as both the light absorber and catalytic active site simultaneously, and exhibit enhanced MOR activity in anode oxidation reaction of DMFCs in contrast to the conventional commercial catalysis. The LSPR-induced photothermal effects result in the increased local temperature of AgPt-BHNPs, significantly accelerating the MOR process. Moreover, the surface charge heterogeneity, which is caused by plasmon effects of Ag species, lead to the decrease of the d-band centre character of Pt in AgPt-BHNPs, thus suppressing the absorption of CO during MOR process and enhancing the CO poisoning tolerance property of AgPt-BHNPs. As such, the work will be of general interests to a broad range of researchers in the field of electrocatalysis.
