Dear Friends,
I hope that all of you and your families have been well since our last contact, and that you have had a successful semester. For those of you planning to attend the Academy conference this year, I look forward to seeing you in Chicago.
I want to let you know that this year we will be offering our third workshop (see the attached program and announcement). Because of my Academy responsibilities, the workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 12th. Brian Wu of Michigan and Guoli Chen of INSEAD and will coordinate the program this year. I hope to standardize the process in order to put in place a sustainable model for future offerings, so please be aware of the requirements, (specified in the program), for our target attendees. Also, I’d appreciate it if you could help by spreading the word about the workshop.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your interest and support over the past few years. My special thanks go to Tieying, Qing, Haibin, Sheng-Tsung, Yu-Ching, Hao-Chieh, Jinyu, and Qingjiu for your dedication and contributions to the workshop.
Moving forward, I plan to offer the workshop every other year, starting in 2009. Each year, two new coordinators will be invited to work in the program. A special session of the program is 傳承, and a few alums of the workshop will be invited to share their experiences. If you happen to be around on Wednesday, please feel free to pop in and say hi to old friends, and to meet a new generation of Chinese scholars.
Ever mindful of the “power of one,” I plan to devote my time and attention only to the workshop at the Academy, which I believe is the most meaningful service I can provide to the community of Chinese scholars. During the year I am not offering the workshop, I plan to hold a group meeting, to which all of you are invited, so that we can catch up and I can offer my support and help.
Finally, I hope you will enjoy the attached competition-cooperation paper. This is my first attempt to integrate my Chinese philosophy with my Western social science training. I am encouraged by this paper’s receipt of the 2008 JMI Best Paper Award.
I look forward to further conversation in the near future. Please keep up your good work, and let me know whenever I can be of help.
All the best wishes to you and your family,
mjc
