- Summary:A novel design principle of gradient electric field-controlled optical switch which bases on the electro-optical effect of LiNbO3 crystal is proposed.The distribution of the gradient electric field and the effect of the electro-optical deflection is studied through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of finite element method(FEM).The influence of the gradient electric field and dimensions of the crystal on the incident beam's deflection angle is discussed.The results show that the gradient electric field can cause the distribution of gradient refractive index in the LiNbO3 crystal and change the direction of the beam gradually, when the maximum applied electric field is on the level of 1 kV/mm,about 2°(340 mrad)deflection angle can be attained,which makes it effectively serve as a device of 1×2 optical switch.
