Abstract: Single metal site catalysts are the most promising candidates to replace the platinum-group-metal (PGM) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet efficient preparation methods and challenges to improve catalytic activity and stability remain to exist. In this article, we report a nitrogen (N)/sulfur (S) co-doped single Fe sites catalyst (Fe(Fc)-N/S-C) through a developed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) strategy with high ORR performance in alkaline media. Using the cyclopentadiene-shielded Fe atom ferrocene (Fc) as the precursor, the isolated single Fe atoms were successfully dispersed and embedded into the N, S co-doped 2D carbon nanosheets. The outstanding catalytic activity is attributed to N, S co-doping, which avoids the formation of iron-carbide-containing iron clusters ("FexC/Fe"), induces the catalyst to produce a high specific surface area, and causes the charge redistribution of Fe atoms. Moreover, the Fe(Fc)-N/S-C catalyst was further studied in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) with encouraging performance.
