近期，聂鹏研究员与新西兰林肯大学马旺林博士、德国霍恩海姆大学Alfonso Sousa-Poza教授的合作论文"The relationship between smartphone use and subjective well-being in rural China"发表于国际重要电子商务学术期刊Electronic Commerce Research，该项研究首次系统地分析了智能手机的使用如何影响农村居民的个人幸福感以及可能的作用机制。聂鹏研究员为该研究的第一作者和通讯作者。
Abstract:
Due to the popularization of the Internet in rural China, mobile Internet use has become an essential part of rural residents’ lives and work. No studies, however, have investigated the potential effect of smartphone use on quality of life among rural residents in China. This study thus applies ordinary least squared, conditional quantile and instrumental variable techniques to survey data for 493 rural Chinese households to assess the impact of smartphone use on their subjective well-being (SWB). The results reveal an association between smartphone use and increases in both life satisfaction and happiness that remains even after we adjust for possible endogeneity. The analysis also indicates, however, that intense smartphone use is associated with lower levels of both SWB measures, especially when it exceeds 3 hours per day. Quantile estimates further indicate that in both amount and intensity, smartphone use has a much greater impact on SWB at the median level of the SWB distribution. Our results suggest that the local government should provide effective education and guidance to rural residents to enhance the positive impacts and also emphasize the negative impacts of quality of life, thereby facilitating the mobile Internet netizens in rural China to take better advantage of this new technology.
