  • Title of Paper:Finite element analysis of a retrieved custom-made knee prosthesis
  • Journal:Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology
  • Summary:Custom-made knee prostheses have been widely used to reconstruct function of lower limb in bone tumor resection. A custom-made tumor knee prosthesis was retrieved on account of prosthesis loosening post-surgery. Misalignment between physiological axis of femur and the femoral stem as well as material loss at the posterior region of tibial plateau were considered to be the primary causes of failure. Based on this hypothesis, nite element analysis has been carried out to study the contact mechanics of the prosthesis
while implanted in vivo. The maximum deformation at femur was 0.58 mm and 1.15mm when the misalignment angle was 3
and 6, respectively. Besides, the maximum
contact pressure at tibial plateau was 44.88 MPa when under extremely hig
exion angle during squatting or kneel sitting. Uneven stress distribution at femur which came from the misalignment was the main cause of loosening and the material loss at the posterior region of tibial plateau aggravated it indirectly. Reasonable prosthesis design and selection, high surgical precision and targeted rehabilitation training programme are signi cant meaningful for prolonging life-span of prosthesis in vivo.
